How do you differentiate yourself from those other schools?Ī: If you look at a lot of the area kids from (high school districts 211, 214 and 220), from the Mid-Suburban League, a lot of those kids when they make the decision to play junior college baseball, they don’t even go to Oakton or Triton, a lot of them are going down south to Heartland, Parkland because they want to be near Illinois State, they want to be near the University of Illinois. Multiple MLB players have come through that program. Q: In this area, you have Oakton, which won a national title just a few years ago, and you have Triton. I think leaving us some room to have some roster flexibility is going to benefit us. I haven’t pushed as hard at getting a lot of commits right now beyond the work that Adam did and beyond some of the other athletes that have been pushed our way, and that’s because I really believe that as this summer continues into the fall and into next spring, there are going to be a lot of kids coming home or deciding to stay home that had previously committed elsewhere. With the previous roster, there is only probably eight or 10 kids that are returning from last year. So even when the head coaching position was in limbo, he continued to recruit players and stay in communication with those that were interested. I’ve retained him because he also coaches for me in the Indians’ program, so we have a really good relationship. Q: How is recruiting going right now with the coronavirus pandemic still going on?Ī: Adam O’Malley, who is my assistant, was on staff last spring under the previous coaching staff.
